The Cote d'Azur is the Coast of Bliss. Countless writers as well as painters seem to have settled there at various times: from Alphonse Karr - who worked there as a gardener - to Colette and Prevert: from Picasso, who worked in ceramics during hus stay, to Renoir, Signac, Leger, Chagall and many others, less famous perhaps, who went to the Riviera searging for a peaceful refuge.
All the courts of Europe were represented also, many a prince or sovereign, having been ousted from power, went there to conclude a destiny which, though lacking in glory, may have brought with it wisdom ...
A ost of testimony and memories have revealed a past whose picture is superimposed on the present. Of course, business and work go on there like antwhere else; but the place pervaded by a carefree hopeful mood.
From Toulon to Menton, the ancient trading posts of the Phenicians and the Greeks, the harbors into which Roman galleys onze sailed, the creeks and hills from which lookouts scanned the horizon for Saracan raiders, the elegant resorts once frequented by royalty, the flower-bedecked cities of the 'Belle Epoque' have now become distinctly cosmopolitan places where the livings is very good indeed.
No other regions have thrived to quite the same extent as this in the past hundred years. Nice is now one of the main cities in France, and all along the coast numerous small towns have spread out their tentacles, while somehow managing to leave havens of peace for those seeking the quiet life and even solitude.
The Riviera is the only region in France where, on the same day, it is possible to go swimming in warm sea water and ski down the slopes of the high valleys - as if nature had wanted to make a bouquet of its beauties and good things!
